Hemos escuchado de algunas comunidades religiosas y otros grupos que están preguntando acerca de los miembros de nuestra comunidad que llegaron más recientemente y cómo podrían apoyarlos y conectarse con ellos. La pandemia de COVID-19 ha hecho que muchas cosas sean más desafiantes, pero las personas aún pueden reunirse por teléfono, Internet (zoom), en un parque o en el estacionamiento de un centro comercial.
Para muchos, la conversación es la mejor parte. Algunos trabajan para aprender juntos: uno le enseña español al otro, el otro inglés, un ganar-ganar. Comparta recetas, consejos sobre vehículos, escuelas, programas para niños en la biblioteca local. Algunos tienen comida para compartir en el parque, cada familia trae comida para compartir, platos desechables. Algunas de estas conexiones han continuado durante años, con el desarrollo de la confianza al aprender sobre las familias y la cultura de los demás, encontrando mucho en común entre ellos.
Nuestra red tiene algunos miembros que se sienten cómodos hablando español, turco, uigur, árabe, etc. Pero, lo que es más importante, tenemos muchos miembros que quieren acercarse y aprender, comprender más y, a veces, ayudar a familias que han tenido un camino diferente en la vida. . Y luego aprendamos cuánto nos parecemos.
NOTE TO RSN CLIENTS, SUPPORTERS
The Refugee Support Network (RSN) non‐profit has been able to provide limited financial assistance for rent, utilities, immigration fees, attorney consultation, transportation, computers, etc., to help clients become more independent and avoid eviction during COVID times.
RSN also has a Special Friends program, whose focus is to become friends with an individual or family, meet and share, learn more about each other, and become trusted friends who can help each other deal with issues such as: challenges of school age kids in school, finding resources to help with financial or medical concerns, local parks and other places to relax, work opportunities, English as a second language conversations and/or tutoring at the library (VITAL) or at the school system (Broadview learning, MCCSC), finding babysitters while you are going back to work part time, finding gently used clothing, furniture, etc.
We have heard from some faith communities and other groups who are asking about our more recently arrived members of our community, and how they could possibly support and connect with them. The COVID‐ 19 pandemic has made many things more challenging, but people are still able to meet over the phone, internet (zoom), in a park, or shopping center parking lot.
For many, the conversation is the best part. Some work to learn together: one teaches the other Spanish, the other English, a win‐win. Share recipes, advice on vehicles, schools, children’s programs in the local library. Some have pot‐lucks in the park, each family brings food to share, disposable dishes. Some of these connections have continued for years, with trust developing from learning about each other’s families, and culture, finding so much in common with each other.
Our network has some members who are comfortable speaking Spanish, Turkish, Uyghur, Arabic, etc.. But more importantly, we have many members who want to reach out and learn, understand more and sometimes assist families that have had a different path in life. And then learn how much we are alike.
