The Latino Film Festival celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, that began Sept. 15 and runs through Oct. 15. The four-day event kicks off Sept. 22 at the Cinema Center, 437 East Berry, with an invite-only opening night. Award-winning Mexican filmmaker Alan Jonsson will present his film “La Carga (The Load)” about a Tameme Indian man, a noble Spanish woman and their escape through the forests of the New World in search of freedom in the 16th century.

La Casa celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — La Casa, the Indiana University Latino Cultural Center, is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with a full calendar of events on the IU campus and Bloomington community.
National Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, honors the contributions made by Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrates their heritage and culture. The month falls within the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua and in celebration of Mexico and Chile’s independence day.
Intersectionality: IU Latina Film Festival and Conference
The third Latino Film Festival and Conference will put Latina filmmakers, actresses, and Latina film scholars at the center. The aim of this festival and conference is to present new perspectives in the studies of Latina identity that move us away from stereotypical representations and that showcases the intersectionality of identity within the contexts of immigration, gender, sexuality, social class, and race/ethnicity issues.
Film shows Colombian history
Given Bloomington’s relatively large Colombian community, Israel Herrera said he and other local Colombians are proud to see “Embrace of the Serpent” in their town.
The film, which is the first Colombian film to be nominated for the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film, screens Friday at the IU Cinema. Following the film’s screening will be a Q&A by actor Brionne Davis, who plays American scientist Richard Evans Schultes.
First Generation film screening set for April 12 at Indiana Theatre
An exclusive screening of the award-winning film “First Generation,” because going to college and succeeding is possible, will be at 7 p.m. April 12 at the Indiana Theatre, 683 Ohio St., at Ohio and Seventh streets. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
There will be door prizes including five free laptops. The event is sponsored by the Indiana State University Office of Student Success and Vigo County College Success Coalition.
The schedule includes a resource fair before the film from 6:30 to 7 p.m. for people to browse as they arrive. The movie showing is from 7 to 8 p.m., and then a discussion led by ISU trustee Kathy Cabello — herself a first-generation college student — will be from 8 to 8:30 p.m. At the conclusion, refreshments will be available and people can again visit the resource fair.

Event for the Entire Community!
All day long, free of charge and bilingual, activities will be offered in each area.
For example, the Health Fair will offer free health services to the community related with obesity, diabetes, mammograms, health screenings and HIV/AIDS among others. The Indiana State Department of Health is a major contributor/partner in this Expo.
The Education area will provide information on pre-school, elementary, middle and high school opportunities, scholarships, university admissions and continuing education – both academic and technical – for students of all ages.
In the Business area, a job fair, product information booths, seminars, financial education and more will be available.
Government affairs, we will have all the armed forces exhibiting their institutions, vehicles, recruiting opportunities, etc…
Entertainment will be all day long closing with a big concert (4,000 to 5,000 people) with an international artist.
